The Litter-Robot™ Review – Self Cleaning Cat Litter Box
Did you know that there are around 73 million owned cats in the United States – and that doesn’t include any wild or stray ones! Three out of every ten households (which equates to 34.7 million) is home to at least one cat. Of the households that have a cat, 49% have just the one but the other 51% have two or more.
Cats are wonderful creatures but even the most die-hard cat lover would be hard pushed to enjoy cleaning out a litter box…and there are a lot of cat litter boxes in America! This is where the Litter Robot LRII Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box comes to the rescue. Anything that relieves the chore of cleaning the cat toilet litter box has got to be a great idea.
What is it?
The Litter-Robot™ is an automatic, self-cleaning, cat litter box, measuring 24 by 22 by 29 inches. It has a base (containing a drawer for the soiled litter), with a globe sitting on top, which has an opening for the cat to enter. Litter-Robot™ comes with a 90 day money back guarantee and a full 18 month warranty.
How does it work?
The cat walks into the globe which contains litter. The Litter-Robot™ detects that the cat is in the chamber by means of a sensor, which is activated by the cats’ weight. Seven minutes is allowed to elapse, to allow for the cat to do what it has to do. After that time, the globe slowly rotates counter clockwise. This sifts the litter and allows clumped (soiled) litter to be deposited into the drawer in the base. The globe then rotates back to where it started, with level, clean litter, ready for the next use.
What happens if my cat tries to go inside the globe while it is rotating?
If your cat tries to enter the globe while it’s rotating, the weight of the cat will trip the sensor. This will automatically turn off the motor, stopping the rotation of the globe. The Litter-Robot will then wait for 15 seconds before attempting to resume the clean cycle.
What if my cat doesn’t’ like it / won’t go into it / won’t use it?
Cats are naturally curious and most will quickly get used to it and use it happily. However, if you are having difficulties, the manufacturers suggest the following:
- Leave The Litter-Robot™ switched off until your cat is completely happy with using it. Simply turn it on to ‘flush’ when the cat is not around.
- Try placing catnip, cat treats or a favourite toy inside the globe to tempt the cat in.
- If your cat isn’t using The Litter-Robot™ at all and is urinating elsewhere, bring your old litter box back into play but leave The Litter-Robot™ out as well. Don’t empty your old litter box and hopefully (cats being clean creatures) your cat will get the message and start to use the cleaner Litter-Robot™.
- Try disguising The Litter-Robot™ with a cardboard box. Cut a hole in the side of the box to match up to the entrance in the globe. Cut another hole to allow you access to the drawer. Leave the unit unplugged whle it is covered and just plug it in to run the cleaning cycle – then unplug it again.
I’ve tried all that and my cat still won’t use it.
You are protected by the manufacturer’s 90 Day Money-Back Guarantee. If you’re not completely happy with The Litter-Robot™ for any reason, just return your Litter-Robot within 90 days after receipt for a full refund of the purchase price (less shipping).
How do I remove the waste litter?
The large drawer in the base that collects the soiled litter can be lined with any regular garbage bag. You simply open the drawer, take out the bag and insert a fresh one. The drawer holds several days worth of waste. Reviewers say that the only drawback is that because there is no odor, they forget to empty the drawer!
The litter drawer can be fully submerged so it’s easy to wash if necessary. The litter box is 24 x 22 x 29 inches and is covered by an 18 month warranty.
Is it safe for my cat?
Yes – there are no rakes or wires. This also means that there is nothing to get jammed, clogged up or break so it’s reliable as well as safe.
How is it powered?
It operates on 12 VDC, so just put your litter in and plug it in.
Is it noisy?
Reviewers report that it has “a loud hum” or “sounds like a hairdryer”. If you’re a light sleeper, you can switch it off at night and then just switch it on again in the morning to ‘flush’.
How much does it cost?
The Litter-Robot™ retails at $349.00 and we find that Amazon generally has the best price.
Wow – that’s quite a price tag!
Yes, it is – but the manufacturers claim that by using The Litter-Robot™ you can save up to 50% on cat litter. It doesn’t require special crystals to aid clumping – all you provide is regular clumping litter and garbage bags. If we look back at the figures of 51% of cat-owning American households owning more than one cat, that could be a substantial saving and the Litter-Robot™ would ‘pay for itself’ in a relatively short time. Plus, you get all the benefits of no odor and not having to constantly clean out the litter box. And, cats are very clean creatures so your fur baby will love it!
Useful for trips…
If you tend to go away at the weekend or are regularly away from home overnight, the Litter-Robot™ is absolutely ideal to ensure cleanliness and comfort for your cat. And it will make your home a lot nicer to come back to!
What do people think of it?
Here are a few pros and cons (condensed) from Amazon customers. You can read more of their reviews here.
Pros
The unit is sturdy, simple to clean, quiet, virtually no odor, cuts down on the amount of cat litter used.
Cons
The step into the globe would be better if it were a grate rather than a flat step. Litter can gather there and stay there.
The cat may spread the litter around while in the globe and it can fall out of the unit and onto the floor.
If you don’t put enough litter in, urine can pool in the bottom. This can cause the litter to absorb the urine and set into a solid block which doesn’t sift down into the drawer when the machine rotates (the reviewer did point out that this was their fault, rather than the manufacturer’s).
A cat lover’s dream…
Overall, reviewers raved about this product and many were ordering a second one for their home. If you’re a cat owner, go and take a look at the manufacturer’s website, or the product for sale on Amazon. You can also go to YouTube and watch many videos of the unit in action! It could make a big difference to your cat-owning experience!
