Mantis Tiller Review: Help! I Need a Garden Tiller
Mantis Tiller 7250-15-02 3-Speed Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand
When we were asked to review garden tillers we didn’t realize just how many there are to choose from. For starters, not only are there a lot of different brands available, but each individual manufacturer has a wide range of various models in their range.
Fortunately it didn’t take us long to narrow the brand down to the Mantis range of tillers. Right from our initial findings this product just stands out from all the rest in terms of quality and price. Mantis tillers also receive outstanding ratings from consumers on the internet.
Once we found the best brand it was just a matter of determining which Mantis tiller met our criteria of best quality, best value for money and best overall home garden tiller. And this is when we happened upon the Mantis 7250 – 3 Speed Electric Tiller.
Read on to see how we rate this garden tiller.
B
efore We Get Started…
One of the things I refer to throughout this review is the tines of the tiller. If you are new to owning a garden tiller, you may be wondering what this means. So in order to get a good definition for you, I turned to Google to see what I could find. A ‘tine’ is defined as a pitch fork or prong. So if we equate that to a tiller, then the tines are the bits that look like spikey wheels on each side of the base of the tiller that rip through the dirt. Now that may not be the best definition so I have included a picture of the tines (to the right) on the mantis tiller, after all a picture tells a thousand words.
How Does it Work?
This is one powerful tiller. We’re not talking industrial strength here by any means but for the home gardener this garden tiller is perfect and it wont be long before you are creating whole new garden areas ready for planting with little effort.
Forget the shovel – you won’t need it with this magic machine.
The Mantis Tiller 7250 digs right down to about 10 inches so it really does a great job of digging up the soil. And in case you haven’t used a tiller before, you can use it directly on grass meaning it saves you time and effort because you don’t need to remove the top layer of grass before you start using this machine. So just to clarify that point, the Mantis tiller digs right through the grass down to about 10 inches – brilliant.
Now another feature of the Mantis tiller that I really like is that you can reverse the tines so that you can shallow cultivate the soil or use it for weeding. This basically means that it won’t dig as deep – up to 2 to 3 inches instead of the usual 10 inches.
You can also use this tiller simply for digging holes. This is especially good for when its time to plant trees and shrubs.
How Much Does it Weigh?
This Mantis tiller weighs approximately 21 pounds. We compared this with other tillers with many weighing a hefty 30 pounds and up. This makes the Mantis quite easy to maneuver. Just think about how much easier it will be to carry in and out of a storage shed. But don’t think that lightweight means inferior quality – on the contrary, this garden tiller is one powerful machine and great value for your money.
How Do You Start the Mantis Tiller?
The Mantis Tiller has an easy to start motor. Simply plug it in, select a speed and just squeeze the trigger. This is so much simpler and easier than gas tillers.
Environmentally Friendly
This Mantis Tiller uses electricity instead of gas so you are really helping the environment by using this model. You won’t have any choking fumes clogging up the air around you making it safer for family and your pets.
Does it Come With a Warranty?
Yes, Mantis have one of the best warranties I’ve seen. Firstly Mantis offers a 1 year no hassle refund if you’re not completely satisfied with the product.
Secondly, they provide a 5 year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. And thirdly, they have a lifetime guarantee against broken tines – if a tine breaks, they will replace it for free!
What about Storage?
This garden tiller is nice and compact compared to some of the bigger bulkier tillers. So if you are short on storage space you will love this model. It takes up less space than most other tillers. And speaking of saving space, this garden tiller has handles that fold down making storage even more compact.
How Much Should You Pay for the Mantis 7250 Electric Tiller?
You shouldn’t be paying anymore than $350 for this tiller. I’ve been checking out prices on Amazon for this product and it stays fairly stable at around $349. If you see it any cheaper than this then it is time to snap it up as I have rarely seen it any less than this.
It’s All About the Motor…
The motor is 540 watts with 3 speeds with up to 240 RPM delivering approximately 3/4hp to the tines.
The 3 speeds are for:
- Cultivating
- Tilling
- Digging
This tiller also comes with a circuit breaker to prevent overloads to the motor.
Optional Accessories
This tiller comes with a border edger included in the price but you can also purchase other attachments for an extra price including:

- Lawn Dethatcher
